2007 Toyota Land Cruiser taillights — what they do and how to look after them

Taillights are absolutely fitted to the 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser. Toyota’s Owner’s Manual and Repair Manual for this model year specify rear combination lamps with tail, stop, indicator and reverse functions, and road rules aligned with UNECE Regulation 48 and the Australian/New Zealand Design Rules require rear position lamps on passenger vehicles. North American equivalents reference FMVSS 108. So yes — the 2007 Land Cruiser uses taillights as standard equipment.

On a 2007 Land Cruiser, the rear combination lamps do a lot more than just glow red. They keep the big Cruiser visible at night and in foul weather, they warn following drivers when braking, and they signal direction changes. Whether it’s a late J100 or early J200 sold in AU/NZ, the assembly typically houses the tail (rear position), stop, indicator and reverse lamps, and on some trims the tail function may be LED while other functions are conventional bulbs. Either way, the job is the same: be seen, stay safe and stay legal.

As part of regular servicing, it’s worth giving the taillights a quick once-over. A few minutes in the driveway can save a roadside chat and a defect notice. Here’s what a careful owner or tech will usually check:

  • Function test: lights on, brakes on, indicators, hazards and reverse — confirm correct brightness and colour.
  • Lenses and seals: look for cracks, clouding or moisture. Condensation often points to a tired gasket or a loose vent.
  • Bulbs and sockets: many variants use common 21/5W stop/tail bulbs, PY21W amber indicators and wedge-type reverse bulbs — but verify by VIN, as some trims use LEDs.
  • Fuses and earths: a single dead side can be an earthing issue, especially if a trailer plug has been fitted.
  • Trailer wiring: check for scotch-locks or poor joins that can cause intermittent faults.

Replacing a bulb or the whole lamp is pretty straightforward. Open the tailgate, remove the two retaining screws at the lamp’s inner edge, then pull the unit straight back to release the clips. Twist out the bulb holders, swap like-for-like bulbs without touching the glass, and re-seat the seal before refitting. If the tail function is LED and it’s failed, the practical fix is a complete lamp assembly. When upgrading to LED retrofit bulbs in non-LED housings, only use units that meet local compliance and won’t upset the Cruiser’s electrics — otherwise it can be non-compliant and trigger fast-flash or warnings. Finish with a quick alignment and brightness check at dusk to make sure the Land Cruiser’s rear end is spot on for the next thousand kilometres.

Popular questions about 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser taillights

What bulbs fit the 2007 Land Cruiser taillights?

Most 2007 Land Cruisers use dual-filament 21/5W bulbs for stop/tail, PY21W amber for indicators and a wedge-type reverse bulb. Some higher trims run an LED tail function within the assembly. Always confirm by VIN or by checking the stamping on the holder, as J100 and early J200 variants differ and market specs vary across AU and NZ.

Why is there moisture in my Land Cruiser’s taillight?

Moisture usually means the lamp’s vent or gasket isn’t sealing properly, or the housing has a fine crack. Remove the lamp, dry it gently, inspect the rear seal and grommets and replace if perished. Avoid drilling holes — that invites dust and water. If the lens is cracked or the LED board is affected, replace the full assembly.

Are LED taillight upgrades legal on a 2007 Land Cruiser in AU/NZ?

They’re fine if the lamp and light source together meet local compliance and don’t change colour, intensity or beam pattern. Dropping generic LED bulbs into housings certified for filament lamps can breach rules and may cause hyper-flash or error behaviour. If you want LED, choose a compliant complete lamp or a retrofit specifically tested for that housing.
