2007 Toyota Crown temperature sensors

Temperature sensors are absolutely fitted to the 2007 Toyota Crown (S180 series, typically with 4GR‑FSE or 3GR‑FSE V6 and Aisin 6‑speed auto). Technical sources that detail these include the Toyota Crown S180 Repair Manual, the Toyota Electrical Wiring Diagram (EWD) for 2007 Crown, and Denso service data for GR‑FSE engine sensors. These documents show the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor, an intake air temperature (IAT) element integrated with the MAF, automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temperature sensing inside the transmission, plus ambient, in‑cabin and evaporator temperature sensors for the climate control.

On this model, temperature sensors do the hard yakka of telling the engine and climate systems exactly what’s going on. The ECT sensor helps the ECU manage cold starts, fuel mixture, ignition timing and radiator fan operation. The IAT fine‑tunes fuelling as air density changes. The transmission’s temp sensing protects the gearbox and adjusts shift feel. And the HVAC temperature sensors keep cabin comfort spot on without the driver fiddling around.

When these sensors age or go out of range, the Crown can run rich, idle high, feel doughy on take‑off, hunt gears, kick on the thermo fans too often, or throw a check‑engine light. A quick scan with live data is the best first step: cold ECT should read close to ambient, then rise smoothly to about 80–95°C as it warms. IAT should be around ambient once the engine bay heat‑soak settles. Odd spikes or impossible readings usually point to a sensor or wiring issue.

As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to:

  • Inspect connectors and loom sections near the thermostat housing, MAF/IAT and transmission for corrosion, oil wicking or brittle insulation.
  • Keep coolant fresh and the thermostat healthy
