2007 Subaru Impreza tail-lights — what they do and how to look after them

Tail-lights are absolutely relevant and factory-fitted on all 2007 Subaru Impreza variants. This is supported by the Subaru Owner’s Manual and Service Manual for the 2007 Impreza (lighting/Chassis Electrical sections), as well as regulatory requirements: Australian Design Rules ADR 13/00 (installation of lighting) and ADR 49/00 (rear position and stop lamps), plus New Zealand’s Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Lighting 2004. Those technical sources make it clear the car must have operational rear position (tail) lamps and stop lamps.

On a 2007 Impreza, the tail-light assemblies house the red rear position lamps, bright stop lamps, indicators, reverse lamps, and reflectors. They keep the car visible after dark, signal braking, and help others see where the Subaru is headed. If a bulb is out or a lens is cloudy, visibility drops and the car may fail a WOF/roadworthy.

Most 2007 Imprezas use incandescent wedge bulbs for the tail/stop functions. Keep an eye out for cracks, faded reflectors, or moisture inside the lens. A quick check once a month—tail, brake, indicator, and reverse—takes seconds and can save a fine. Replace bulbs in pairs so brightness stays even left-to-right, and stick with quality bulbs that meet ADR/UNECE specs. If considering LED retrofits, choose ADR-compliant options designed for the housing and confirm they’re legal in your state or NZ jurisdiction.

  • Replacement basics:
    1. Park safely, ignition off, open the boot.
    2. Pop off the boot-side trim to expose the tail-light fasteners.
    3. Undo the two 10 mm nuts
