2007 Nissan Maxima brake wheel cylinders — not used on this model

According to Nissan’s 2007 Maxima (A34) Factory Service Manual (Brake/BR section) and the Nissan electronic parts catalogue (FAST), this model runs four-wheel disc brakes — ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear — with sliding hydraulic calipers. Hydraulic brake wheel cylinders are a drum-brake component, so they’re not fitted to the 2007 Maxima.

Wheel cylinders live inside drum brake assemblies and push the shoes outwards against the drum. The Maxima’s rear brakes are discs, so hydraulic actuation happens via caliper pistons, not wheel cylinders. The car does have an internal drum-in-hat handbrake inside the rear rotors, but that mechanism is cable-driven and mechanical, not hydraulic, so it still doesn’t use wheel cylinders.

Why Nissan went this route is pretty straightforward: disc brakes offer stronger heat management, consistent pedal feel, and tidy integration with ABS, EBD and traction systems. They’re also simpler to inspect and service compared with drums. If you’re seeing “wheel cylinder” listings for a 2007 Maxima, that’s typically a catalogue mismatch or a generic part listing meant for other Nissan models that run rear drums.

For owners, the focus should be on disc-brake upkeep rather than chasing non-existent wheel cylinders. As part of routine servicing, it’s smart to:

  • Inspect and replace brake pads and rotors as needed
