2007 Holden Barina coolant — what it is and how to look after it

Coolant is absolutely used on the 2007 Holden Barina. Technical references including the Holden Barina TK Owner’s Handbook (Cooling System), GM Service Information for the F16D3 1.6‑litre engine, and the Chevrolet Aveo/T250 Workshop Manual (the Barina’s platform mate) all specify an ethylene‑glycol, silicate‑free OAT coolant (commonly DEX‑COOL) and prescribe routine replacement as part of scheduled servicing.

In this Barina, coolant does a lot more than just stop freezing. It moves heat out of the engine, resists boiling on hot Aussie and Kiwi days, and packs corrosion inhibitors that protect the alloy head, radiator, water pump, and heater core from scale and rust. It also helps lubricate the water pump seal, which keeps leaks at bay and extends component life.

For servicing, the Barina calls for an OAT, long‑life coolant meeting GM specifications (DEX‑COOL type). Mixing different coolant chemistries (like green IAT or hybrid HOAT) can shorten service life and sludge up the system, so sticking with the correct spec is the safe play. A 50/50 premix with demineralised water delivers the right freeze/boil protection and pH balance
