2007 Ford Mondeo drive-belt tensioner: fitted, what it does, and how to look after it

Based on workshop literature and parts catalogues, a drive-belt tensioner is fitted to the 2007 Ford Mondeo. Ford’s Technical Information System (TIS) for 2007 Mondeo models, the Haynes Ford Mondeo 2007–2014 manual, and both Gates and Dayco accessory drive catalogues list a spring-loaded auxiliary belt tensioner across the common engines of that year (Duratec 1.6/2.0/2.3 petrol and TDCi 1.8/2.0). Note that some variants use a separate stretch-fit A/C belt without its own tensioner, but the main serpentine/auxiliary belt is tensioned by an automatic tensioner on all engines referenced.

The tensioner’s job is to keep the auxiliary (serpentine) belt at the right tension as it spins the alternator, power steering pump, water pump and A/C compressor. It automatically takes up slack as the belt wears and compensates for engine vibrations, so the belt doesn’t squeal, slip or flog out accessories. On the Mondeo, the unit is typically a spring-loaded arm with an idler pulley and a damping mechanism to smooth movement.

As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to check the tensioner whenever the auxiliary belt is inspected or replaced. A healthy tensioner keeps steady pressure with smooth, controlled movement. If there’s pulley wobble, gritty rotation, end play, oil contamination, cracking of the arm/stop, or a fluttering belt at idle with accessories on, it’s time for a closer look. Squeaks, chirps on start-up, or battery-charge warnings can also point to a weak or seized tensioner.

Most tech sources and trade practice suggest replacing the tensioner with the belt at higher kilometres, especially if the history’s unknown. In Aussie and Kiwi conditions, that often means around 100,000–150,000 km or 6–10 years, but go by the belt condition, noise checks and any service bulletins for your specific engine. If your Mondeo uses a separate stretch-fit A/C belt, replace it with the correct tool and technique
