2006 Toyota Aurion Brake Fluid — what it does and when to change it

Brake fluid is absolutely relevant to the 2006 Toyota Aurion. Technical references, including the Toyota Aurion (GSV40, 2006) Repair Manual – Brake (BR) section and the Owner’s Manual, specify a hydraulic braking system using glycol-ether brake fluid meeting FMVSS No.116 DOT 3 (SAE J1703). DOT 4 (SAE J1704) is also acceptable. That means the Aurion relies on brake fluid to safely stop, and it needs periodic attention as part of normal servicing.

In this Aurion, brake fluid transfers the force from the pedal to the calipers and the ABS/Vehicle Stability Control hydraulic modulator. It also lubricates internal components and resists corrosion inside the master cylinder, lines and calipers. Because glycol-based fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture from the air), its boiling point drops over time. That can lead to a spongy pedal or brake fade on long downhill runs — not what anyone wants.

For local conditions in Australia and New Zealand, a conservative and widely used service practice is to replace the brake fluid every 2 years (or around 40,000 km), even if the car hasn’t done many kilometres. Toyota Genuine Brake Fluid DOT 3 is the baseline spec for the 2006 Aurion
