2006 Honda Elysion brake shoes — what they do and how to look after them
Based on Honda’s technical literature for the Elysion (RR1–RR4) platform — including the Honda Service Manual parking brake section and the Honda Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) — the 2006 Honda Elysion runs front ventilated discs and rear disc brakes that incorporate a drum-in-hat parking brake. That setup uses dedicated brake shoes inside the rear rotor hat. So yes, brake shoes are used on this model, but they operate the handbrake/parking brake rather than the main service brakes.
On the 2006 Elysion, the brake shoes sit inside the “hat” of the rear brake rotor. When the handbrake is pulled or the foot-operated parking brake is applied (depending on variant), a cam spreads the shoes against the small internal drum surface to hold the vehicle. They’re separate from the rear hydraulic disc pads, so normal braking wear doesn’t affect them — but hill parking, frequent handbrake use, contamination, or poor adjustment can.
As part of routine servicing, it’s smart to have the parking brake shoes inspected, cleaned, and adjusted. A technician will remove the rear rotors, blow out brake dust, check lining thickness and arc, inspect the shoe hold-down hardware and return springs, and ensure the lever/cable moves freely. Adjustment should always start at the shoes (via the star wheel) before any cable tweaks, so the handbrake holds firmly without excessive lever travel.
- Tell-tale signs they need attention:
- Handbrake won’t hold on a hill or needs too many clicks
- Scraping or squeal from the rear with the handbrake applied
- Uneven hold or hot brake smell after parking
- Good maintenance habits:
- Inspect every 20,000–30,000 kilometres or during rear pad/disc work
- Keep friction surfaces clean
