2006 Ford Transit knock sensor: used or not?
For most 2006 Ford Transit vans sold in Australia and New Zealand, a knock sensor isn’t fitted or used. Those vans are typically the Duratorq diesel (TDDi/TDCi) models — 2.0 or 2.4 — and diesel engine management on these Transits doesn’t rely on a knock sensor. The only 2006 Transit variant that uses a knock sensor is the much rarer 2.3-litre petrol (Duratec) model.
Why no knock sensor on the diesels? Diesel combustion is controlled by injection timing and rail pressure rather than spark, so the ECU doesn’t need to “listen” for detonation like a petrol engine does. Instead, the Bosch EDC system on these Transits uses inputs such as crank and cam position, MAP, MAF, coolant temp, intake air temp, fuel rail pressure and pedal position to shape multiple injection events (pilot, main, post) and manage combustion noise. Any “diesel knock” you hear is a different phenomenon to petrol detonation and is handled through calibrated injection strategies, not a discrete knock sensor.

How to know what you’ve got: if the compliance plate or rego lists “2.3 petrol” (Duratec), there will be a knock sensor screwed into the block on the intake side. If it’s a 2.0 or 2.4 Duratorq diesel, there isn’t one to service or replace.
What this means for servicing: diesel Transits from 2006 don’t have a knock sensor to worry about. If there’s rattly combustion, rough running or limp-home on a diesel, look first at injector performance, fuel quality, air leaks, EGR function, boost control and sensor data (MAF/MAP/ECT/IAT/CKP/CMP), rather than chasing a non-existent knock sensor. For the 2.3 petrol, a failed knock sensor can trigger a check-engine light and reduced power, the fix is straightforward sensor replacement on the block, with the connector and harness checked for oil ingress or heat damage.
