2006 Ford Ranger EGR Valve — What It Does and How to Look After It

Based on Ford Workshop Manual coverage for the 2006 Ranger (petrol 3.0L Vulcan and 4.0L SOHC), Motorcraft/Ford parts catalogues, and the PJ Ranger/Mazda BT-50 workshop manuals for the 2.5L and 3.0L Duratorq diesels used in Australia and New Zealand, the 2006 Ford Ranger is fitted with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve on the vast majority of engines. Some North American 2.3L calibrations may differ, but for AU/NZ diesel models and most petrol variants, an EGR valve is part of the emissions system and is fully relevant to servicing.

The EGR valve on a 2006 Ford Ranger is there to reduce NOx emissions by feeding a metered amount of exhaust gas back into the intake. That cooled, inert exhaust displaces some oxygen, naturally lowering combustion temperatures. On the road, that helps the Ranger meet its emissions standards without robbing drivability. On the diesel PJ models (late 2006 onward), it’s a vacuum-controlled or electronically actuated valve often paired with an EGR cooler
