2005 Toyota RAV4 drive-belt — what it does and when to replace it
Technical sources confirm a drive-belt is absolutely fitted to the 2005 Toyota RAV4. Toyota’s factory service information for the 2AZ‑FE engine (used in AU/NZ 2005 RAV4), along with Gates and Dayco AU/NZ catalogues and common workshop manuals, all show a single multi-rib serpentine belt driving the engine accessories. The engine uses a timing chain for cam drive, so there’s no timing belt — but the accessory drive-belt is essential and very much part of regular servicing.
On a 2005 RAV4, the drive-belt spins the alternator, the power steering pump, the A/C compressor and the water pump. If it’s loose or worn you might hear squeals or chirps on cold start, see the battery light flicker, get heavy steering, weak air-con, or notice the temp gauge creeping up because the water pump isn’t moving coolant properly. If it snaps, the vehicle can quickly overheat and lose charging and steering assist — not ideal on a school run or a weekend away.
Servicing-wise, most techs in Australia and New Zealand will inspect the belt at every service under the bonnet and recommend replacement roughly every 90,000–120,000 km or about 5–7 years, sooner if there’s wear. Local heat, lots of short trips, dust, or accessory loading can shorten belt life. Look for cracks across the ribs, fraying edges, glazing/shiny ribs, missing chunks, or rubber dust around the pulleys. A chirp or squeal under load is a giveaway too.
Replacement is straightforward with the right approach. The RAV4 uses an automatic spring tensioner — back it off with a suitable spanner or serpentine tool, slip the old belt out, route the new one exactly as per the under-bonnet diagram, then let the tensioner take up the slack. While you’re there, spin the idler and tensioner pulleys by hand and check for noise or play
