2005 Toyota Land Cruiser brake fluid — what it does and when to change it

Brake fluid absolutely applies to a 2005 Toyota Land Cruiser. Toyota’s Owner’s Manual for the 100 Series (2005 model year) and the Toyota Repair Manual (Chassis, BR section) specify a hydraulic brake system using glycol-based brake fluid that meets FMVSS No.116 DOT 3 (SAE J1703), with DOT 4 also acceptable in many markets. The reservoir cap itself is typically marked “Use only DOT 3” on these models, and the system integrates ABS and stability control that rely on clean, moisture-free fluid to work properly.

On this Land Cruiser, brake fluid transfers the force from the pedal to the calipers and wheel cylinders, resists boiling under heavy braking (towing, off-road descents, hot days), and protects internal components from corrosion. Because glycol brake fluid is hygroscopic, it absorbs moisture over time. That lowers its boiling point and can lead to a soft pedal, longer stopping distances, and internal rust in the master cylinder, ABS modulator and calipers.

For Aussie and Kiwi servicing, a practical rule is to replace the brake fluid every 24 months, or sooner if contaminated. While some schedules vary, technicians commonly flush with about 1 litre of fresh DOT 3 (or DOT 4 where specified), bleeding all four corners and the ABS unit per the Toyota procedure. Signs it’s due include a spongy pedal, dark or cloudy fluid, or a scorching/brake fade smell after heavy stops.

  • Use high-quality DOT 3 (Toyota’s spec) or DOT 4 if permitted
