For AWD 2005 Kluger models, the centre-bearing sits mid-way along the two-piece tailshaft, cradled in a rubber mount and bolted to the body. Its job is to support and steady the rotating shaft, keeping driveline angles true and quelling vibration as torque is sent to the rear differential. When the bearing or its rubber isolator wears, owners often notice a shudder on take-off, a droning or humming at certain speeds, or a thump on overrun.
As part of regular servicing on an AWD Kluger, a quick check of the centre-bearing pays off. The tailshaft should be paint-marked before disassembly to preserve phasing, flanges cleaned, and fasteners torqued to spec on reassembly. If the bearing is supplied as part of a support assembly, it’s wise to fit the complete unit rather than pressing just the bearing, which can stress the rubber isolator. After refit, a road test for vibration under load and at cruise confirms the result.
