2005 Toyota Altezza Thermostat — What it does and how to look after it
The 2005 Toyota Altezza absolutely runs a thermostat. Toyota’s factory service literature for the SXE10/GXE10 Altezza (and the related Lexus IS200) lists the thermostat and water inlet housing in the cooling system, with testing and replacement procedures for both 1G‑FE and 3S‑GE engines. Toyota engine manuals for these motors specify a wax‑pellet thermostat that begins opening around the low‑80s °C to keep the engine in its sweet spot.
The thermostat’s job is straightforward: help the engine warm up quickly, then hold a steady operating temperature for performance, economy, and emissions. When cold, it stays shut to speed warm‑up. Once the coolant hits its set point (typically about 82 °C), it opens gradually to circulate coolant through the radiator. That means quicker heater output on a frosty morning and consistent temps when giving it a bootful.
- Faster warm‑up = less wear and better fuel use
- Stable temp = reliable power and knock control
- Prevents over‑cooling on the open road
Thermostats aren’t a frequent service item, but after many years and kilometres, the wax capsule and spring can get tired. If the gauge wanders, the heater’s weak, it takes ages to reach temp, or it overheats under load, the thermostat is a prime suspect. Many owners choose to replace it proactively when doing a coolant change, water pump, or timing belt on 1G‑FE/3S‑GE engines.
- Use a genuine or high‑quality thermostat matched to your engine code (1G‑FE or 3S‑GE) and the correct gasket/O‑ring.
- Install with the jiggle pin at 12 o’clock to help air bleed correctly.
- Refresh coolant with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) or the correct spec, and bleed air thoroughly under the bonnet.
- Inspect hoses and clamps
