2005 Subaru Impreza drive-belt: what it does and when to replace it
Technical sources including the 2005 Subaru Impreza Owner’s Manual, the Subaru Factory Service Manual (FSM) for EJ-series engines, and major belt catalogues used by workshops confirm this model is fitted with accessory drive-belts. On these engines, the drive-belts run the alternator, power steering pump and air-conditioning compressor. The engine’s water pump is driven by the internal timing belt, not by the external accessory belts.
On a 2005 Impreza (2.0 or 2.5, including WRX), there are typically two ribbed drive-belts under the bonnet: one for alternator/power steering and a separate one for the A/C. Their whole job is to keep the battery charging, the steering light, and the cabin cool. If a belt slips or fails, the battery may stop charging, the steering can get heavy at low speed, and the A/C may fade—none of which is fun on a busy arvo.
As part of regular servicing, the belts should be inspected for cracks, fraying, glazing (shiny patches), missing ribs, and edge wear. Belt tension and alignment matter too
