2005 Nissan Tiida gas struts — what they do and when to swap them out
Based on the Nissan Tiida C11 Service Manual (Body – Back Door section) and Nissan FAST/EPC parts listings for the 2005 model, the hatchback (Tiida/Versa/Latio C11) is factory-fitted with gas-filled back-door stays (gas struts). The sedan’s boot uses torsion bars rather than struts, and the bonnet is supported by a prop rod. So gas struts are relevant for the hatch’s tailgate on a 2005 Nissan Tiida, but not for the sedan boot or the bonnet.
On the Tiida hatch, gas struts take the heavy lifting out of opening the tailgate and hold it up safely while loading the weekly shop or the pram. They’re sealed, pressurised supports designed to deliver smooth, controlled motion and stop the tailgate from slamming or drooping onto shoulders and heads. When they’re healthy, the lift is easy and the hold is rock solid.
Over time, seals wear and the gas charge drops off. Typical signs they’re on the way out include: the tailgate needing a big heave to open, sagging in colder weather, a slow or jerky rise, or the hatch dropping unexpectedly. If any of that sounds familiar, it’s time to replace them—ideally as a matched pair so lift and damping stay even on both sides.
- Safety first: always support the tailgate with a prop or a helper before removing struts.
- Swap in pairs: uneven forces can twist hinges and make the hatch sit wonky.
- Don’t lube the shaft: oil or grease attracts grit and ruins seals—just wipe clean with a soft cloth.
- Mind the clips: use a small flat screwdriver to release retaining clips
