2005 Daihatsu Terios — Brake Fluid

Brake fluid absolutely is used on the 2005 Daihatsu Terios. The model runs a conventional hydraulic braking system (with ABS on many trims), which relies on brake fluid to transmit pedal force. This is documented in the Daihatsu Terios Owner’s Manual and the factory Service Manual brake section for the J100/J102 series (1997–2006), which specify DOT 3 (and DOT 4 as acceptable) fluid meeting international standards such as FMVSS No. 116 and ISO 4925.

For the Terios, brake fluid’s job is to transfer the driver’s foot pressure at the pedal into clamping force at the calipers and wheel cylinders. It also lubricates internal components and helps resist corrosion inside the master cylinder, lines, ABS modulator and calipers. Because it’s hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture from the air), its boiling point drops over time, which can lead to a soft pedal, longer stopping distances and brake fade—especially on hot descents, towing, or off-road work.

As part of regular servicing, the Terios benefits from fresh brake fluid on a time basis, not just kilometres. A good rule of thumb for Aussie and Kiwi conditions is a complete fluid replacement every 24 months or around 40,000 km, whichever comes first. In humid, coastal or off-road environments (think creek crossings or frequent mud), consider shorter intervals.

When topping up, use fresh, sealed DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid as shown on the reservoir cap or in the manual. DOT 4 is fine to use in place of DOT 3 and offers a higher boiling point
