2004 Toyota Highlander headlights: what they do and how to look after them
Headlights are absolutely fitted to, and relevant for, the 2004 Toyota Highlander. This is confirmed by Toyota’s 2004 Highlander owner’s manual and Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue, which list standard halogen headlamp assemblies and service globes. The vehicle’s compliance with lighting regulations such as ADR 13/00 (ANZ markets) and FMVSS 108 (North America) also presumes operational headlights. Typical globes are HB4/9006 for low beam and HB3/9005 for high beam, with daytime running lamps in some markets.
On the road, the headlights are there to keep things safe at night and in poor weather, helping the driver see hazards and making the Highlander clearly visible to others. Good, bright beams also reduce eye strain on long night drives and keep the vehicle compliant for WOF/regos.
As part of routine servicing, it’s smart to give the headlights a quick once-over. Replace globes in pairs so brightness and colour match. For most 2004 Highlanders, they’re halogen globes: don’t touch the glass with bare fingers, and stick to the correct wattage. If the beam pattern seems off, have the aim checked to meet local road rules. Cloudy lenses are common on older vehicles—UV haze can be polished back with a headlight restoration kit, but heavily crazed lenses are best replaced for proper clarity.
- Access: With the bonnet open and ignition off, reach behind the headlamp, twist the globe holder anti-clockwise, unplug, and swap in the new globe. Refit, then test both beams.
- Electrics: If a lamp won’t light, check the headlight fuses and the headlight relay in the engine bay fuse box before chasing wiring faults.
