2004 Toyota Camry drive-belt pulleys: what they do and when to service them
Drive-belt pulleys are absolutely fitted to the 2004 Toyota Camry (XV30). Technical sources including the Toyota Camry 2002–2006 Repair Manual (Engine Mechanical and Cooling sections for 2AZ‑FE and 1MZ‑FE/3MZ‑FE), the Gates Accessory Belt Drive System catalogue, and Dayco component listings all specify a serpentine drive with multiple pulleys on this model. Both the 2.4‑litre four-cylinder and the V6 engines use a crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) plus accessory, idler, and automatic tensioner pulleys to run the alternator, A/C compressor and power steering pump.
On this Camry, the drive-belt pulleys transfer the crank’s rotation to essential accessories and keep the belt tracking straight and at the right tension. The crank pulley also doubles as a torsional damper to smooth out vibration. A tidy pulley set means reliable charging, cool air-con and easy steering under the bonnet.
As part of routine servicing, pulleys deserve a proper look. The usual tells of a crook pulley are squeals or chirps on cold start, a grinding or rumbling bearing noise at idle, visible wobble, belt “walking” to one side, or fine rust-coloured dust around a pulley face. A flickering tensioner arm is another giveaway. When any of these show up, replacement of the suspect pulley—and often the belt—should be on the cards.
