2004 Ford Mondeo thrust bearing: what it is and how to look after it
Referencing Ford’s workshop information (TIS/ETIS for Mondeo 2000–2007), the Haynes Ford Mondeo Petrol & Diesel 2000–2007 manual (No. 4156), and clutch system catalogues from LuK/Schaeffler and Sachs, the 2004 Ford Mondeo with a manual gearbox uses a concentric slave cylinder (CSC) that incorporates the clutch release “thrust” bearing. Automatic models don’t use a clutch thrust bearing because they run a torque converter. So, the thrust bearing is relevant to manual 2004 Mondeo variants (MTX‑75 and applicable Getrag six‑speed units), and not fitted on autos.
On 2004 Ford Mondeo manual models, the thrust bearing—also called the clutch release or throw‑out bearing—sits inside the bellhousing as part of the concentric slave cylinder (CSC). Its job is to translate pedal effort hydraulically into a smooth push on the clutch diaphragm spring, letting the friction disc freewheel so gears can be selected cleanly. Because it spins at engine speed whenever the pedal is held down, and it lives beside the heat of the flywheel, it’s a consumable item, when the bearing dries or the CSC seals age, it can squeal, rumble, or leak, and pedal feel goes vague.
Best practice is to renew the CSC/thrust bearing whenever the clutch kit is replaced, because the gearbox has to come out anyway. Many Mondeo owners do the lot in one go: friction disc, pressure plate, CSC, and an inspection of the dual‑mass flywheel for excess play or heat marks. If there’s noise with the pedal depressed, difficulty engaging first or reverse, or a soft pedal with brake fluid disappearing from the shared reservoir, it’s time to act.
After refit, bleed the clutch hydraulics with fresh DOT 4 using a pressure bleeder so bubbles are purged from the concentric unit. Avoid rapid pedal pumping with the bleed screw closed, as this can flip master‑cylinder seals. Check for weeps at the quick‑connect, the bleed nipple, and the bellhousing, even a light mist can find its way onto the disc.
There’s no periodic greasing—the bearing is sealed—so preventative care is all about fluid hygiene and driving habits. Replace contaminated fluid, and avoid sitting at lights with the clutch held down, selecting neutral and releasing the pedal reduces bearing load and heat. Where the car does mainly city kilometres, planning a proactive CSC and clutch service around 150–200,000 km can prevent a roadside drama.
Use quality parts. Kits from LuK/Schaeffler, Sachs, or genuine Ford typically deliver the best longevity and pedal feel. While the gearbox is out, check the guide tube, release fork pivot (where fitted), and the input‑shaft seal, and address any oil contamination before it shortens the life of the new clutch.
Does a 2004 Ford Mondeo have a thrust bearing?
Yes—if it’s a manual. The thrust bearing is integrated with the concentric slave cylinder inside the bellhousing. Automatic Mondeos don’t have a clutch thrust bearing because they use a torque converter.
What are the signs of a failing thrust bearing on a 2004 Mondeo?
A squeal, chirp, or rumble when the clutch pedal is pressed, a spongy pedal, difficulty engaging first or reverse, and brake fluid loss from the shared reservoir are the big giveaways. Noise that changes as the pedal is pushed in is a classic clue.
Should the thrust bearing be replaced with the clutch?
Absolutely. Because the gearbox has to come out, most workshops replace the clutch kit and the CSC/thrust bearing together, then bleed with fresh DOT 4. It saves on labour and helps avoid an early repeat job.
