2004 Ford Mondeo manifold gasket — what it does and when to replace it

Yes, a manifold gasket is absolutely used on the 2004 Ford Mondeo (Mk3). Ford’s ETIS workshop manual procedures for intake and exhaust manifold removal/installation specify renewing the gaskets, and Ford’s Microcat/FINIS parts catalogue lists both intake and exhaust manifold gaskets as service parts across the 1.8/2.0 Duratec HE petrol, 2.5 V6, and 2.0/2.2 Duratorq TDCi engines. Haynes and Autodata coverage for this model back this up, noting gasket replacement whenever the manifold is disturbed.

On this Mondeo, the manifold gasket’s job is to seal the join between the cylinder head and the intake or exhaust manifold. On the intake side it keeps unmetered air out, protecting smooth idle, fuel trims, and overall driveability. On the exhaust side it stops hot gases escaping under the bonnet, which protects nearby components, reduces noise, and ensures the oxygen sensors and (on TDCi models) turbo system see the right flow and pressure. Depending on engine, gaskets are rubberised/composite for intake and multi-layer steel or graphite-faced for exhaust.
