2003 Toyota bB Headlights
Headlights are absolutely fitted to the 2003 Toyota bB and are essential to its safe operation. Technical references that confirm this include the Toyota bB owner’s manual for the NCP30/NCP31 series and Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue, which list halogen headlamp units and service parts. Broader requirements like Australian Design Rules (ADR 13/00 and 46/00) and New Zealand’s Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Lighting 2004 also make dipped and main-beam headlamps mandatory for road use, so the bB could not be sold or registered without them.
On the 2003 bB, the headlights provide reliable forward visibility at night and in poor weather, plus a clear signature for oncoming traffic to see the vehicle. Many examples use a dual‑filament halogen bulb (commonly referred to as H4/9003), giving both low and high beam from the same lamp. As with any halogen system, light output gradually fades with age, long before the bulb fails outright.
As part of regular servicing, it makes sense to check the bB’s headlights every 10,000–15,000 kilometres or at each oil change. A quick look at clarity, beam pattern and brightness can save hassles at a WOF/roadworthy or on a dark country road.
- Replace bulbs in pairs to keep colour and brightness matched left to right.
- If plastic lenses look yellow or hazy, use a quality restoration kit
