2003 Toyota Altezza tail-lights: what they do and how to look after them
Based on technical documentation, tail-lights are absolutely fitted to and required on the 2003 Toyota Altezza. Toyota’s Electrical Wiring Diagram for the XE10 platform (Altezza/IS200) details a rear combination light assembly with tail (rear position), stop, indicator and reverse circuits, and Toyota’s service manuals list replacement procedures and parts for these lamps. Regulatory requirements such as Australian Design Rules for lighting and NZTA’s VIRM (Warrant of Fitness) also mandate functioning rear position lamps, so they’re not optional on this vehicle.
On a 2003 Altezza, the rear combination lamps do a lot of heavy lifting: they make the car visible at night and in poor weather, show braking intent, signal turns, and light the way when reversing. Some JDM variants also include a rear fog lamp. In short, they’re safety-critical and a must for passing rego/WOF.
As part of routine servicing, it’s smart to check the tail-lights every few months or before long trips. Most Altezza variants use conventional bulbs rather than full LED clusters, so brightness can fade and filaments can fail over time. Confirm the correct bulb types for your specific market model (common fits include W5W/T10 for tail/park, P21/5W or 7443 for stop/tail, PY21W or 7440A for indicators, and W16W/921 for reverse). Always match the colour and wattage to avoid WOF or ADR issues.
Replacement is straightforward: open the boot, remove the trim panel, unplug the connector, and undo the mounting nuts (usually 10 mm). Ease the lamp out evenly so the lens or studs don’t crack. Inspect the foam gasket, if it’s flattened or torn, replace it to prevent water ingress. Clean bulb sockets and earth points, then apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to keep corrosion at bay. After refitting, test tail, brake, indicator and reverse functions before refitting trims.
Condensation or water droplets inside the lens usually point to a tired gasket or a hairline crack. Light fogging can clear via the lamp’s vents, but persistent moisture needs attention—new gasket, re-sealing, or a replacement lamp. Thinking about LED bulbs? Use ADR/NZ-compliant units designed for reflector housings and correct any hyperflash with proper resistors, otherwise it can fail inspection.
- Quick checks: walk-around light test monthly
- Keep spare bulbs in the boot
- Replace in pairs for uniform colour and brightness
What bulb types fit the 2003 Toyota Altezza tail-lights?
Bulb types can vary by market, but common options are W5W/T10 for tail/park, P21/5W or 7443 for stop/tail, PY21W or 7440A for indicators, and W16W/921 for reverse. Always confirm against the owner’s manual or the marking on the existing bulb holder to make sure the base, wattage and colour are right for your car.
If in doubt, take the old bulb to the parts counter or use a reputable parts catalogue keyed to your VIN.
How do they fix condensation in an Altezza tail-light?
Minor misting often clears after a decent drive, thanks to the lamp’s vents. If water pools or fogging persists, remove the lamp, dry it thoroughly, and inspect the lens and housing for cracks. Replace the foam gasket if it’s flattened or perished, and ensure the vent ports aren’t blocked. Severe cracking generally means the lamp needs replacing.
When reinstalling, don’t overtighten the nuts—pinched gaskets warp and leak.
Are LED tail-light bulbs legal on a 2003 Altezza in AU/NZ?
They can be, provided the LED replacements are ADR/NZS compliant for colour, brightness and beam pattern. Poor-quality retrofits may cause glare, odd colour, or hyperflash on indicators and could fail WOF/regos. Choose quality LED bulbs designed for reflector housings and fit proper load resistors or a compatible flasher if required.
When in doubt, stick with OEM-spec incandescent bulbs or certified LED assemblies.
