The oil pump’s job is to push pressurised oil through the engine so everything stays lubricated, cooled, and clean. It feeds the crank and rod bearings, cam journals and lifters, and—on turbo variants—helps keep the turbocharger happy. By maintaining proper oil pressure, it prevents metal-to-metal contact, carries away heat, and sweeps debris to the filter. Without a healthy pump, the bearings and cams can suffer damage in no time.

On a 2003 Impreza, the pump isn’t a routine “consumable”, but it should be checked any time the front of the engine is open—especially during a timing belt service (around the 100,000 km mark).
