2003 Nissan Serena drive belt — what it does and how to look after it

Based on technical references — notably the Nissan Serena C24 service manual (EM/MA sections), Nissan FAST parts listings, and aftermarket catalogues from Gates and Dayco — the 2003 Nissan Serena (C24) is fitted with a V‑ribbed accessory drive belt. The petrol QR20DE/QR25DE and the YD22 diesel variants use a timing chain for the camshafts, while a separate serpentine-style belt drives front-end accessories such as the alternator, air conditioning compressor and, depending on variant, the power steering pump.

That drive belt’s job is simple but vital: it transfers engine rotation to the accessories that keep the Serena charging, cool inside the cabin and easy to steer. If it slips or snaps, the alternator stops charging, A/C cuts out, and hydraulic steering assist is lost. On some configurations, coolant circulation may also be affected, so any belt issue should be sorted promptly.

As part of routine servicing, the belt should be inspected at every service interval. Many workshops in Australia and New Zealand aim to replace accessory belts around 90,000–120,000 km or 6 years, but condition rules — heat, dust, short trips and heavy A/C use can age belts faster. The C24 platform also uses an automatic tensioner and idler(s)
