2003 Holden Astra Brake Shoes
Referencing the Holden Astra TS (Astra-G) workshop information in GM TIS and the Haynes/ Gregory’s manuals covering 1998–2004 models, most 2003 Holden Astra variants sold in Australia and New Zealand were built with rear drum brakes that use brake shoes (e.g., City, Classic/Equipe), while higher-spec models (such as CDX, SRi and Turbo) typically had rear disc brakes that use pads. So brake shoes are relevant to many 2003 Astras, but not to those fitted with rear discs. On disc‑equipped cars the handbrake works through the caliper, so there are no shoes at the rear at all.
For Astras that do run rear drums, brake shoes do the quiet, unglamorous work of slowing the car alongside the front discs. Housed inside the brake drum, the curved friction linings push outward against the drum when the pedal’s pressed, converting speed into heat and stopping the car. They also handle handbrake duties, holding the car on hills without fuss.
Servicing-wise, the factory guidance (Holden service schedules and GM TIS) is to inspect the rear brakes at routine services. Shoes generally last longer than front pads, but they still wear and can glaze or absorb contamination. Replace the shoes when the lining approaches the wear indicator or if the material is cracked, oil-soaked, or uneven. If the drum is scored, heat-spotted, or beyond its wear limit, machine or replace it. It’s smart to renew the hardware kit (springs/retainers) and clean and lube the adjuster so the self‑adjust mechanism actually self‑adjusts.
- Typical signs they’re due: longer stopping distances, a low or inconsistent pedal, handbrake travel increasing, scraping or grinding from the rear, or pulling to one side under braking.
- When replacing: do both sides as a pair, clean out dust safely, avoid touching the friction surfaces with greasy hands, and bed the new shoes in with a series of gentle stops.
Don’t forget the supporting cast. Check for weeping wheel cylinders and renew if damp or sticky
