2002 Subaru Legacy pedal pads
Pedal pads are absolutely relevant on the 2002 Subaru Legacy. Subaru’s Factory Service Manual for the 2002 Legacy/Outback (BE/BH platform) and the Subaru FAST parts catalogue (Group 35, Pedal) both show replaceable rubber pedal pads/covers on the brake pedal, and on the clutch pedal for manual models. The accelerator uses a different style of treaded face and isn’t typically referred to as a “pedal pad”.
On this model, the rubber pad’s job is simple but critical: give the driver solid, non-slip footing so braking (and clutch modulation) stays consistent in the wet, with muddy boots, or on long drives. Over time the rubber can harden, glaze, or wear smooth, which increases stopping distance and can cop a fail at a WOF or roadworthy inspection.
As part of routine servicing, it’s smart to inspect pedal pads every service interval or 10,000–15,000 km. If the pad is shiny, cracked, thinning on the edges, or you can feel your foot sliding, it’s time to replace. Auto models will usually need only the brake pad
