It’s located on the rocker/valve cover under the bonnet and is essential for sealing the oil filler neck.

This oil cap does a deceptively big job. It seals the top of the engine so dust, moisture, and road grime don’t get into the oil. It also helps the crankcase ventilation system maintain the correct pressure balance. A cap that doesn’t seal properly can lead to oil misting around the filler area, a whiff of burnt oil, and, in some cases, rough running or a check engine light due to an intake air/PCV imbalance.

On the 2002 Legacy, the cap is a twist-on design with a rubber gasket or O-ring that provides the seal. Over time, heat cycles make that rubber harden or flatten.
