2002 Nissan X‑Trail Headlights
Headlights are absolutely fitted to the 2002 Nissan X‑Trail (T30). This is confirmed by the Nissan X‑Trail (T30) Owner’s Manual and Nissan Electronic Service Manual for the 2002 model year, which specify halogen headlamps as standard equipment, and by Australian/New Zealand road regulations (e.g., ADR 13/00 and related lighting rules) that require compliant forward lighting. Most AU/NZ T30 models commonly use H4 dual‑filament halogen globes for combined low/high beam, with separate small position/park globes.
On a 2002 X‑Trail, the headlights do the heavy lifting after dark and in bad weather: they light the road, make the vehicle visible to others, and provide a proper beam pattern that won’t dazzle oncoming traffic when correctly aimed. They’re also a legal requirement for night and low‑visibility driving, so keeping them right is part of sensible servicing.
For maintenance, it’s worth checking the lenses for yellowing or haze, as UV and road grime can dull output over the kilometres. A good plastic lens restoration kit can bring them back, but if the coating is badly gone or the housing is cracked, replacement is the safer bet to restore beam clarity and keep moisture out. Inside the engine bay (under the bonnet), access to the rear of the headlamp is straightforward: unplug the connector, remove the rubber dust cap, release the spring clip, swap the globe, and refit. Don’t touch the glass of a new halogen globe—skin oils can shorten its life.
When replacing, stick with ADR‑compliant H4 halogen globes of the correct wattage. Over‑wattage bulbs might look tempting, but they can cook wiring, melt sockets, or distort reflectors. If one globe fails, replace both sides so colour and brightness match. If a lamp is out and a new globe doesn’t fix it, check the relevant fuse and the headlight relay before chasing wiring faults.
Correct aim matters. Park on level ground facing a wall, about 7.5 metres away, with normal load and tyre pressures. Use the adjusters on the headlamp housing to set the low‑beam cutoff just below the lamp centre height and ensure left/right spread is even. Carrying a spare H4 globe on road trips is a handy no‑dramas backup.
- Inspect operation (low/high beam) at every service.
