2002 Nissan Serena centre-bearing — is it used?
Based on the Nissan Serena C24 factory service manual (Driveline & Axle sections) and the Nissan FAST electronic parts catalogue for the C24 series, a centre-bearing isn’t used on the typical 2002 Nissan Serena that’s front-wheel drive. Those technical references show the 2WD C24 runs a transverse front transaxle with two short driveshafts (CV axles) and no propeller shaft, so there’s no need for a centre (carrier) bearing. The only C24 variants that list a carrier/centre bearing in the parts and workshop literature are the 4WD models, which use a long, two‑piece propeller shaft to the rear differential and require a centre support bearing to keep the shaft aligned.
Why it’s not used on most 2002 Serenas: the front-wheel drive layout puts the gearbox and differential together at the front, sending power to the front wheels via compact CV shafts. That eliminates the long underbody prop shaft you’d see in rear‑ or all‑wheel drive setups, so there’s no mid‑span support to service. This is consistent across the C24’s 2WD driveline diagrams in the service manual and the absence of any centre‑bearing listing in 2WD parts groupings in Nissan FAST.
If the vehicle is a 4WD Serena (C24 4x4), it will have a propeller shaft and a centre-bearing. Owners of those models should refer to the propeller shaft/carrying bearing information in the C24 driveline section of the workshop manual or the relevant propeller shaft group in the parts catalogue.
