2002 Holden Barina Gas Struts

Gas struts are relevant to the 2002 Holden Barina (XC). Technical sources including Holden/GM EPC listings for the XC Barina and Opel/Vauxhall Corsa C (the Barina’s European twin) workshop and owner’s manuals specify gas-filled lift supports on the rear hatch/tailgate. These sources also show the bonnet uses a manual prop rod from factory, not gas struts. So, while there are no factory bonnet struts, the tailgate definitely relies on a pair of gas struts to hold the hatch open and make lifting and closing smooth and safe.

On the Barina, the hatch struts do the heavy lifting: they counterbalance the tailgate, slow movement for a controlled open and close, and keep the hatch up while loading. Over time, seals wear and nitrogen charge weakens, especially with age, heat, cold, and dust. That’s when the hatch starts dropping, feels heavy, or won’t stay up on cooler mornings.

  • Hatch won’t stay open or slowly sags.
  • Needing two hands or a big shove to lift the hatch.
  • Clicking or binding at the hinge area.
  • Oily residue on the strut shaft or body.
  • Better/worse behaviour with temperature swings.

Servicing advice for a Barina’s gas struts is straightforward:

  • Replace in pairs to keep lift even and avoid twisting the hatch.
  • Support the hatch with a prop or a helper before removal.
  • Avoid gripping or scratching the chrome shaft
