2002 Ford Fiesta drive-belt: what it does and when to replace it

Based on technical references including the Ford Workshop Manual (Fiesta 2002–2008), Ford ETIS/TIS service data, the Haynes Manual for Ford Fiesta 2002–2008, and application catalogues from Gates and Dayco, the 2002 Ford Fiesta is fitted with an auxiliary drive-belt (often called a serpentine or FEAD belt). It powers front-end accessories such as the alternator, power steering pump, and the air-con compressor where fitted—so the drive-belt is absolutely relevant on this model.

On a 2002 Ford Fiesta, the drive-belt’s job is to spin all the essentials that keep the car happy day to day. Alternator charging? That’s the belt. Hydraulic power steering assistance (where equipped) and cool air from the A/C? Also the belt. It’s distinct from the timing belt that drives the camshafts inside the engine. If the auxiliary belt slips or snaps, charging stops, steering gets heavy, and the battery light will make itself known under the bonnet’s heat.

For routine servicing, most workshops in Australia and New Zealand will inspect the Fiesta’s drive-belt at every service. Ford’s documentation focuses on condition-based replacement
