2002 Daihatsu Gran Move Brake Fluid — What It Does and How to Look After It

Brake fluid is absolutely relevant and used on the 2002 Daihatsu Gran Move. Technical references such as the Daihatsu Gran Move/Pyzar (G300 series) workshop manual and owner’s handbook specify a conventional hydraulic braking system using glycol-based brake fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4) conforming to FMVSS 116/SAE J1703 standards. That system feeds the master cylinder, calipers/wheel cylinders and ABS modulator, so the car relies on brake fluid for safe stopping.

On this Gran Move, the brake fluid’s job is to transfer the driver’s foot effort into clamping force at the wheels. It needs a high boiling point to resist heat from repeated braking, plus corrosion inhibitors to protect internal seals and metal components. Because it’s hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture through hoses and seals over time), its boiling point slowly drops, and internal corrosion risk rises—both of which can show up as a spongy pedal, longer stopping distances or unhappy ABS behaviour.

For servicing, most Daihatsu schedules and industry practice recommend replacing the brake fluid every 2 years or around 40,000 km, whichever comes first. Use DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid that meets FMVSS 116/SAE J1703. Don’t use silicone-based DOT 5, and avoid mixing in any unknown or contaminated fluid. Under the bonnet, check the reservoir level and colour monthly
