2001 Toyota Crown clutch kit — is it relevant?

Short answer: a clutch kit isn’t used on the 2001 Toyota Crown (S170 series) Royal Saloon, Athlete, or Estate. Technical sources including the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) for the S170 Crown (1999–2003), Toyota New Car Features (NCF) for the same generation, and contemporary 2001 Crown specification brochures list only automatic transmissions (A340E/A341E 4‑speed and, on some 3.0‑litre models, the A650E 5‑speed). No factory manual gearbox is specified for these trims. The only Crown-related model of that era with a manual and clutch assembly is the separate Crown Comfort taxi variant, which is a different platform and not the standard Crown.

Because the 2001 Crown is automatic, it uses a torque converter and flexplate rather than a clutch friction disc, pressure plate, and release bearing. That means there’s no conventional “clutch kit” to replace or maintain on these vehicles. If someone’s cross-referencing parts and sees a “clutch kit” listed for a 2001 Crown, it’s almost certainly a catalogue mix-up with the Crown Comfort or a generic listing not applicable to the S170 Crown.

What should owners and workshops focus on instead? Transmission health and driveline checks are the go-to for smooth, reliable motoring.

  • Automatic transmission service: replace ATF at the recommended interval using the correct spec fluid for the A340E/A341E or A650E. Heat is the enemy, so fluid condition matters.
  • Cooling system check: the transmission cooler (often via the radiator) needs to be clean and leak-free to keep ATF temperatures in check.
  • Driveline inspection: look over the flexplate for cracks if the gearbox is ever removed, and ensure the torque converter and flexplate bolts are torqued correctly.
  • Rear main seal and engine/gearbox mounts: inspect while access is available
