2001 Toyota bB wheel hubs — what they do and when to replace them

Wheel hubs are absolutely fitted to the 2001 Toyota bB. Toyota’s own technical references — including the Toyota bB (NCP30/NCP31/NCP35) Repair Manual and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue — show front and rear hub and bearing assemblies for this model, with ABS and non-ABS variants depending on spec. Major aftermarket catalogues from bearing makers also list hub/bearing units for the 2001 bB, confirming their relevance.

On the bB, the wheel hub sits at the centre of each wheel, bolting the wheel to the car and allowing it to spin smoothly on a sealed bearing. Up front, the hub is splined to the driveshaft (FWD or 4WD variants), while the rear uses a hub and bearing assembly mounted to the axle beam. Many bB hubs incorporate a magnetic ABS tone ring that the wheel speed sensor reads, so the hub plays a role not just in rolling but also in braking stability.

These hubs use sealed bearings that don’t need regular greasing. Instead, good servicing is about inspection, correct torque, and timely replacement when wear shows up. If a hub bearing starts to fail, it’ll usually make a humming or growling noise that changes with speed or when turning. Left too long, it can cause uneven tyre wear, ABS warning lights, or noticeable wheel play.

  • Common signs it’s time: droning/hum that gets louder with speed, ABS light on bumps, steering wobble, heat at the hub after a drive, or roughness when the wheel is spun with the car safely lifted.
  • Service tips: keep wheel nuts torqued evenly, avoid pressure-washing directly at hub seals, and check for play at each service interval or around every 10,000–15,000 km.

When replacing, use quality parts matched to ABS configuration. Up front, the bearing is typically pressed into the steering knuckle and the hub is installed through it
