2001 Suzuki Swift EGR valve — what it does and how to look after it

For the 2001 Suzuki Swift (SF413/SF416, typically with the G13BB 1.3 or G16B 1.6 EFI engines sold in Australia and New Zealand), an EGR valve is fitted. This is documented in Suzuki’s factory Service Manual for SF413/SF416 (section “Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System”, Publication No. 99500-81A10/81A20), supported by the Suzuki Electronic Parts Catalogue listing “Valve Assy, EGR” for these engines, and echoed in the Haynes Suzuki Swift 1989–2004 Service and Repair Manual, which details EGR system checks. Some markets and very early or carburetted variants differed, but the 2001 AU/NZ EFI Swift is built with EGR.

The EGR valve on this Swift helps cut NOx emissions by recirculating a measured bit of exhaust gas back into the intake under light throttle. That cools combustion temps, keeps the authorities happy on emissions, and can even smooth cruising. When it’s all working, the driver won’t notice a thing. When it’s not, they might cop rough idle, a flat spot off the line, pinging under load, or a check engine light with codes like P0400–P0402.

EGRs aren’t a regular “replace by X km” item
