2001 Suzuki Swift crank angle sensor: what it does and how to look after it

On this model the sensor is integrated into the distributor and provides the ECU with engine speed and position signals, some documentation calls it a crank angle sensor (CAS), others list it as crankshaft/camshaft position within the distributor.
On a 2001 Swift, that crank angle sensor is the timing boss. It tells the ECU exactly where the pistons and valves are so the computer can fire the spark and inject fuel at the right moment. No clean, accurate signal equals rough running, misfires, or a no‑start. The distributor‑mounted CAS is driven off the cam, so it effectively reports both cam phase and crank speed to the ECU in one go.

- Clear any codes, perform an idle relearn if needed, and road test over a few kilometres to confirm clean starts and smooth pull.
A quick oscilloscope check of the CAS waveform is gold for diagnosis, but a basic multimeter and scan tool can still get the job done. Use quality parts that match OE specs, cheap copies can give flaky signals and leave the Swift stranded under the bonnet up the road. Keep the connector clean, the loom supported, and fix any oil leaks into the distributor early—small jobs that save big headaches.
