2001 Nissan Navara (D22) Pedal Pads — What They Do and When to Replace
Pedal pads are absolutely relevant to the 2001 Nissan Navara (D22). The Nissan D22 workshop manual and EPC/parts listings show replaceable rubber pads fitted to the brake and clutch pedals on manual models, and a brake pedal pad on automatic models. The accelerator typically uses an integrated plastic tread rather than a separate rubber pad. That means “pedal pads” on this Navara refers mainly to the brake (and clutch if manual) pedal rubbers.
On a workhorse like a Navara, pedal pads do a lot of quiet heavy lifting. They provide grippy, non-slip contact for boots in the wet, reduce vibration, and protect the metal pedal face from wear. They’re basic, cheap parts that punch well above their weight for safety. If they’re worn smooth, cracked, hard, or oily, stopping distance and pedal feel can suffer — and that can raise eyebrows at roadworthy or WOF time in Australia and New Zealand.
As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to check the pedal pads every 12 months or 20,000 km, or more often if the ute sees beach runs, farm work, or off-road use. Keep them clean with mild soap and water, skip silicone dressings and greasy cleaners that can make them slippery. If oil or brake fluid has soaked a pad, replace it — contaminants can permanently harden rubber.
- Signs it’s time to replace:
- Ribs worn flat or shiny/glazed surface
- Cracks, splits, or the pad shifting on the pedal
- Hard plastic feel instead of pliable rubber
Swapping them out is a quick DIY win. Pop off the old pad, warm the new rubber in hot water for a minute to soften it, then hook the top lip over the pedal and work around the edges until it’s fully seated. No glue should be needed, if it won’t stay put, it’s the wrong size or the pedal face is bent. Manual D22s take brake and clutch pads, autos just the brake. Stick with genuine or quality aftermarket pads sized for the D22 so the fit and grip are right.
If the pedal feels off even after fresh pads, check the pedal pivot bushings and for fluid leaks — the pad might be the messenger, not the message. But for most Navaras, a fresh set of pedal rubbers brings back that planted, confident feel underfoot.
- Do all 2001 Navara models have pedal pads?
Manual D22s have replaceable rubber pads on both the brake and clutch pedals. Automatics have a replaceable brake pedal pad. The accelerator uses an integrated tread rather than a separate rubber pad on most trims. - Will worn pedal pads fail a WOF or roadworthy?
They can. Inspectors in NZ and AU often check that pedal surfaces are secure and non-slip. If the pad’s smooth, cracked, or missing, it may be flagged. Fresh pads are inexpensive insurance for compliance and safety. - Are universal pedal pads okay on a D22?
They can work, but it’s better to use pads specified for the D22. Correctly sized pads seat firmly on the pedal plate and deliver consistent grip without trimming or improvisation.
