2000 Toyota Hilux Surf headlight-bulbs — what they do and how to look after them
Headlight bulbs are absolutely fitted to the 2000 Toyota Hilux Surf. Technical sources including the Toyota Hilux Surf owner’s manual for the N18# series (1999–2002), the Toyota Repair Manual for 4Runner/Hilux Surf (N18# platform), and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue specify replaceable halogen headlight bulbs (commonly H4/HB2/9003, 12V 60/55W) in the factory headlamp units.
On a 2000 Hilux Surf, the headlight bulbs handle both low and high beam in one globe (dual‑filament H4). They’re there to give a clean, legal beam pattern for safe night driving and poor weather — and to keep the Surf on side with ADR/NZTA/WoF requirements. Halogen bulbs slowly dim with age, so even before they blow, light output can drop noticeably. That’s why many owners replace them in pairs every few years, especially if the vehicle does regular country kilometres.
Servicing the headlight bulbs is straightforward. Under the bonnet, each lamp has a 3‑pin plug, a rubber dust boot and a spring clip. With the lights switched off, unplug the connector, peel back the boot and release the clip to remove the old bulb. When fitting the new H4 bulb, align the locating tabs and avoid touching the glass — skin oils can shorten bulb life. Refit the clip, boot and plug, then test both beams.
Good habits help the bulbs last and perform:
- Replace in pairs to keep beam colour and brightness matched.
- Stick to the specified 12V 60/55W H4 rating
