2000 Daihatsu Terios oil pump — what it does and when to replace it

Yes, the 2000 Daihatsu Terios is fitted with an engine oil pump. This is documented in the Daihatsu Terios J100/J102 Series Workshop Manual (Engine Mechanical – Lubrication section: Oil Pump) and the Daihatsu Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) listings for the J1-series Terios, which include an oil pump assembly, pickup and relief valve components. The HC-EJ and K3-VE engines used in this era both employ a crankshaft-driven trochoid (internal gear) pump mounted at the front of the block behind the timing cover.

On the Terios, the oil pump’s job is to push the right amount of clean oil through the galleries to the crank and rod bearings, camshaft journals and lifters, and across the filter. It builds pressure quickly after start-up, keeps a stable film of oil at cruise, and works with a relief valve to prevent over-pressure at higher revs. If the pump is tired or starved, the warning lamp can flicker at hot idle, the top end may sound a bit rattly, and bearing wear can snowball quickly — not the kind of adventure anyone wants.

There’s no scheduled replacement interval for the Terios oil pump
