1999 Toyota Caldina EGR valve – what’s fitted, what’s not, and how to look after it

Whether a 1999 Toyota Caldina has an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve depends on the engine. Referencing Toyota’s technical literature and parts catalogues: the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) lists EGR components under Emission Control for ST210/AT211 petrol (3S‑FE, 7A‑FE) and CT216 diesel (3C‑TE) variants, while no EGR hardware is shown for the ST215W GT‑T (3S‑GTE). Toyota service documentation (EC/Emission Control sections in the Repair Manual and the New Car Features guide for the ST215 3S‑GTE) likewise describes an EGR system for the 3S‑FE/7A‑FE and 3C‑TE, and explicitly omits an EGR system on the 3S‑GTE turbo.

Why the GT‑T (3S‑GTE) doesn’t run EGR: the turbocharged 3S‑GTE manages NOx with calibrated spark/fuel maps and a high‑efficiency catalyst. Adding EGR on that engine can raise intake charge temps, complicate boost control, and blunt response, so Toyota engineered it to meet period JDM regs without EGR hardware. That’s why owners won’t find an EGR valve on a stock 1999 Caldina GT‑T.

For 1999 Caldina models that do have EGR (3S‑FE, 7A‑FE petrol and 3C‑TE diesel), the valve’s job is to feed a metered bit of exhaust gas back into the intake to cool combustion and slash NOx. Around town, that helps emissions and can smooth part‑throttle driveability.
