1999 Toyota Caldina brake wheel cylinders — are they used, and what to do about them

Based on Toyota technical references — including the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalog for the T210-series Caldina (model codes such as ST210/CT216) and the factory Brake (BR) section of the Toyota Repair Manual for these models — 1999 Toyota Caldina variants fitted with rear drum brakes do use rear brake wheel cylinders. Performance grades like the GT-T, which have rear disc brakes, do not use wheel cylinders because discs employ hydraulic calipers instead.

For drum-brake Caldinas, the rear wheel cylinder is the small hydraulic unit that lives inside the drum, pushing the brake shoes outwards against the drum face when the pedal’s pressed. It’s a simple bit of kit, but it’s vital for straight, predictable stopping — particularly in the wet, or with a boot full of gear on a Kiwi road trip or an Aussie run down the coast.

Servicing-wise, wheel cylinders should be inspected whenever the rear drums are off. Look for dampness around the rubber boots, swollen or cracked rubber, and uneven shoe wear. If a boot is wet, the internal seals are likely gone and the cylinder should be rebuilt or replaced. Fresh brake fluid every two years helps keep corrosion and seal wear at bay
