On this Barina, the front hubs work with a pressed-in, sealed double-row bearing inside the steering knuckle, supporting the CV shaft and letting the wheel spin smoothly. The rear typically uses a hub and bearing assembly on drum-brake models (some variants with discs differ), carrying the wheel and providing the mounting face for the wheel bolts. They keep the wheel centred, support the vehicle’s load, and, on ABS-equipped cars, carry the tone ring for the speed sensor.

Because the bearings are sealed, there’s no regular greasing—maintenance is about inspection. As part of scheduled servicing, a tech will usually:

  • Spin each wheel and listen for a growl or rumble that changes with speed.
  • Check for play by rocking the wheel at 12 and 6 o’clock.

Up front, the bearing is pressed into the knuckle, and the hub flange is installed through it—this needs a press and the right drifts to avoid damaging the new bearing. Out back, many drum setups are replaced as a complete hub/bearing unit, which is more straightforward. On ABS cars, care is needed not to nick the sensor or tone ring, and the sensor air gap should be checked.
