1999 Holden Barina driveshafts — what they do and how to look after them

Driveshafts are absolutely relevant to a 1999 Holden Barina. The SB-series Barina (based on the Opel Corsa B) is front‑wheel drive and uses two CV‑jointed front driveshafts. This is documented across technical sources including the Holden Barina SB Workshop Manual (1994–2001), GM/Opel TIS for Corsa B front axle and driveline, and common aftermarket manuals such as Gregory’s and Haynes, all of which detail inspection, removal and refit of the Barina’s front driveshaft assemblies.

On this Barina, the driveshafts transfer torque from the transaxle to the front wheels while allowing the suspension to move and the wheels to steer. Constant Velocity (CV) joints at each end keep power delivery smooth through tight angles, so the little Holden accelerates cleanly without shudder. The outer CV joints do the heavy lifting during steering, while the inner joints manage plunge as the suspension travels.

As part of routine servicing, it pays to give the driveshafts a quick once‑over. Look for split CV boots, slung grease around the inside of the wheel or control arms, and listen for clicking on tight turns (outer joint wear) or vibration under load (inner joint issues). If a boot is torn, replacing the boot and grease early can save the joint
