1999 Ford Mondeo drive-belt — what it does and how to look after it

A drive-belt is absolutely relevant on the 1999 Ford Mondeo. Technical references including the Ford Mondeo 1997–2000 Workshop Manual (Section 303-05 Accessory Drive), the Haynes Ford Mondeo Oct 1996–2000 manual, and aftermarket catalogues from Gates and Dayco all specify auxiliary/serpentine drive-belts for the 1.6/1.8/2.0 Zetec petrol, the 2.5 Duratec V6, and equivalent diesel variants. Even where the V6 uses timing chains for the cams, it still relies on an external serpentine belt to run accessories.

On this Mondeo, the drive-belt (often called the serpentine or auxiliary belt) spins key ancillaries under the bonnet — think alternator to keep the battery happy, power steering pump for light steering, and the air-con compressor for cool air on a hot arvo. No belt, no charge, heavy steering, and a toasty cabin. Simple as that.

As part of routine servicing, the belt deserves a look every service and replacement based on condition or time and kilometres. A sensible interval in Aussie and Kiwi conditions is about 60,000–100,000 km or 4–6 years, whichever comes first, noting that heat, oil contamination, or lots of stop–start use can shorten life. Some Mondeo engines also use a separate stretch-fit A/C belt
