1997 Toyota Hilux Surf Fuel Filter — What it does and when to replace it
The 1997 Toyota Hilux Surf absolutely uses a fuel filter. Both diesel (1KZ-TE) and petrol variants (3RZ-FE and 5VZ-FE) are fitted with serviceable filtration. This is documented in Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue (Fuel group, PNC 23300), the Toyota Repair Manuals for the 1KZ-TE and 5VZ-FE engines (fuel system sections covering filter removal/installation and priming), and widely used workshop references such as the Haynes 4Runner 1996–2002 manual and Gregory’s Hilux/Surf service guides.
On the diesel 1KZ-TE, the filter is a canister element mounted in the engine bay with a hand primer and usually a water-in-fuel sensor. It strips out fine particles and water before fuel reaches the injection pump and injectors, protecting those high-precision parts and keeping performance crisp. Petrol models use a high-pressure inline filter that keeps injectors clean and the pump happy
