Parts for your 1997 Ford Falcon-Brake fluid

1997 Ford Falcon Brake Fluid — Purpose, Type and Service Advice

Based on Ford Australia’s EL Falcon Owner’s Manual and the factory workshop manual for the 1996–1998 EL series, the 1997 Ford Falcon uses a conventional hydraulic braking system requiring glycol‑ether brake fluid meeting FMVSS 116 DOT 3 (Ford spec ESA‑M6C25‑A) or DOT 4. Silicone DOT 5 is not to be used. Brake fluid is therefore absolutely relevant to this model.

On a 1997 Falcon, brake fluid does the heavy lifting behind the scenes. It transfers force from the pedal to the callipers and wheel cylinders, keeps internal parts lubricated, and carries corrosion inhibitors to protect lines, seals and the ABS modulator (where fitted). Because it’s hygroscopic, it gradually absorbs moisture from the air. That moisture lowers the boiling point, which can lead to a soft pedal, longer stopping distances, or brake fade under repeated hard stops, towing, or hilly driving.

For best results, owners should replace the brake fluid every 2 years or around 40,000 km, even if the car isn’t driven much. Many technicians will also test the fluid’s boiling point or moisture percentage during routine servicing. When topping up, match the spec on the reservoir cap or the handbook: DOT 3 or DOT 4 are suitable
