1996 Toyota Hilux Surf Brake Fluid
Brake fluid is absolutely relevant to the 1996 Toyota Hilux Surf. Toyota’s Repair Manual for the 4Runner/Hilux Surf (1996–2002, Brake System section) and the 1996 4Runner Owner’s Manual specify a conventional hydraulic brake system using SAE J1703 (DOT 3) brake fluid, with ABS where fitted. Toyota Australia and Toyota New Zealand service literature commonly recommends routine brake fluid replacement at regular intervals.
In this Hilux Surf, brake fluid does the heavy lifting behind the scenes. It transfers pedal force to the master cylinder and down to the calipers and wheel cylinders, allowing confident stopping on-road and off the beaten track. The fluid also lubricates internal seals and helps protect components from corrosion. Because it’s hygroscopic, it gradually absorbs moisture, which lowers its boiling point and can cause a soft, spongy pedal, fade on long downhill runs, and internal rust in the master cylinder, lines, calipers and the ABS modulator.
For service, DOT 3 fluid that meets SAE J1703 is the factory call-out
