1996 Daihatsu Gran Move Water Pump — Purpose, Service and Replacement

According to Daihatsu’s workshop literature for the Gran Move/Pyzar G300 series (Cooling System section) and the Daihatsu Electronic Parts Catalogue for the same chassis and HD/HE family engines, the 1996 Daihatsu Gran Move is fitted with a conventional, engine-driven water pump. So yes, a water pump is absolutely relevant to this model.

The water pump’s job is straightforward but vital: it circulates coolant through the block, head, heater core and radiator to keep the 1.5–1.6-litre four-cylinder running at the right temperature. Without steady flow, hotspots form, the thermostat gets cranky, and before long they’re staring down overheating, warped alloy, and big repair bills. On these engines the pump is driven by a belt, and it relies on a mechanical seal and bearing to spin quietly for years.

For servicing, most techs in Australia and New Zealand recommend replacing the water pump whenever the timing belt is changed, because access overlaps and it saves paying for the same labour twice. Typical timing belt intervals are around 100,000 km or 5 years (check local service data and engine code). A quality replacement pump should come with the correct gasket or O-ring
