1996 Daihatsu Gran Move fuel pump — what it does and how to look after it

For the 1996 Daihatsu Gran Move (G300-series, also known as Pyzar), a fuel pump is absolutely relevant and fitted. Factory technical literature — including the Gran Move/Pyzar G300 workshop manual (Fuel System section) and the Daihatsu electronic parts catalogue for G300 models — identifies an in-tank electric fuel pump module supplying the electronic fuel injection (EFI) system. There isn’t a carburettor version in this market year, so no mechanical pump on the engine.

That in-tank electric unit pushes petrol from the tank to the fuel rail at controlled pressure so the injectors can meter an accurate amount for smooth starting, solid mid‑range pull, and clean emissions. It also keeps itself cool and quiet by sitting in fuel, with a little strainer (sock) on the pickup to catch debris before it reaches the main fuel filter.

As part of regular servicing on a 1996 Gran Move, it’s worth keeping an ear out for a loud whine from the tank, watching for hard starts after sitting, hesitation under load, or flat spots at highway speeds — all common signs of a tired pump or a clogged filter. Before blaming the pump, it’s smart to check fuel pressure with a gauge, verify power and earth at the pump connector, and confirm the fuel pump relay and main filter aren’t the culprits.

  • Good habits: keep at least a quarter-tank to help cool the pump, replace the main fuel filter at the recommended interval, and avoid iffy servo fuel.
  • When replacing: fit a new tank seal/O-ring and the pump strainer
